Workplace Mediation

An Overview

Workplace Mediation

Workplace mediations are held between work colleagues. They may have the same or equivalent seniority in the organisation, or one may be a manager of the other.

When navigating personal differences, workplaces are particularly challenging environments. Target-driven, time-limited and working in close proximity, the UK workforce is expected to perform hire-wire acts of social cohesion every day. It is no surprise that reports in 2025 by the HSE and UK Faculty of Public Health revealed 40.1 million working days being taken up by workplace conflict each year at a cost of around £30 billion, mainly from needless resignations and dismissals. Given that employers must absorb these losses, they routinely engage mediators to help repair fractured relationships across all their ranks of seniority.

These private meetings are efficient, cost-effective and highly successful. Employees welcome Workplace Mediation because, unlike disciplinary action or grievance procedures, its flavour is informal and there is always plenty of common ground. Employees often propose it themselves, as do employers because they value the skills of their staff and want to retain them. It often takes only small adjustments to re-normalise a strained workplace relationship.

The commonest cause of workplace disputes is blameless miscommunication. It arises between people doing their best to work under pressure, to deadlines, on different floors, using the imperfect medium of email or group chat. Even where people’s differences are slight, these aggravating factors can create trigger points for months of conflict. And in legitimate complaints of bullying, harassment and discrimination, weaknesses in communication will always deepen the problem. By exploring the points of view of all participants, Workplace Mediation explores the often accidental causes of a fractured relationship and empowers participants to agree solutions that only hours earlier seemed out of reach.
